Wedding dress alterations can cost between $200 and $800, sometimes more or less. Most brides require 2-3 fittings and a 'pick up' fitting. Depending on the style of dress and complexity of the work, the cost for alterations will vary. Hemming, bodice alterations and bustles are three areas most likely to be altered. Pressing is optional and can run $50-200 depending on the dress. Don't expect your seamstress to store your gown. Once it is done being altered you can take it home to store until your wedding.
The bottom of your bridal gown will almost always need to be shortened. Much of time its more complicated than it looks. . Have more layers of tulle, organza or chiffon? A layer of lace on the hem? Is the hem beaded? See a plastic webbing around the bottom? This is called horsehair and will need to be removed and replaced when hemming. The more work to shorten the more the cost to alter it.
Average $125.
Bustling your wedding dress will protect it from getting dirty and damaged after your ceremony. It also allows you to dance the night away without tripping over your train. You don’t want to haul around a huge lace train all night and have people step on it. Hooks and eyes, or buttons and loops are sewn into the dress to lift the train off the floor and over the outside of the dress. This presents an elegant “ballroom” look for full gowns and long trains. Average $100
